Matadors Fall in Straight Sets at 14th-Ranked UC Irvine
4/9/2022 9:47:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - One night after spoiling a season-high hitting performance from Kyle Hobus, 14th-ranked UC Irvine spoiled another impressive hitting performance from Daniel Wetter on Saturday as the Anteaters swept CSUN in straight sets in a Big West Conference match at the Bren Events Center.
Set scores were 25-14, 25-23, 28-26 as UCI improves to 10-13 overall and 3-5 in the Big West. The Matadors slip to 6-12 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Wetter led all hitters in the match, putting down 15 kills while hitting an impressive .667 on 21 swings. Wetter, who committed just a single hitting error in the two-match series with UCI, wound up with 28 kills on 40 attacks to hit .675 in the two matches. Wetter also added a pair of blocks on Saturday.
• Ryan DeWeese and Inaki Bustamante each came off the bench to play the final two sets, knocking down five kills apiece but no other CSUN hitter had more than four kills in the match. DeWeese also served two of the Matadors' three aces while Bustamante added one dig and one block.
• Setter Donovan Constable notched 34 assists and four digs but after hitting .336 Friday in Northridge, the Matadors would connect at a .170 (36-20-94) clip on Saturday.
• Franceso Sani led the Anteaters for the second straight night, posting 14 kills on .435 hitting as UCI hit a season-high .395 (41-11-76) as a team.
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"We had some guys in Ryan and Inaki that came in and did a really nice job lifting up the team; they definitely gave us a chance to win tonight. It's frustrating with the wins and losses but I feel like we're continuing to get better as a team and I still think we're moving in the right direction."
SET 1
After the hosts opened up an early three-point lead (6-3), the Matadors got back within one following a Wetter kill and a UCI hitting error. Still down by a point at 10-9 following a Hobus kill, CSUN surrendered a 4-0 run which opened up a 14-9 UCI lead. Another Wetter kill kept the margin at four (14-10) but the hosts would claim seven of the next nine points to open up an insurmountable 21-12 lead. Leading by 10 at 24-14, the Anteaters served an ace on set point for the 25-14 win.
SET 2
After UCI claimed three of the first four points of the second set, a Bustamante kill would fuel a 5-1 Matador run that gave CSUN a 10-8 lead. Four straight Anteater points saw UCI re-take the lead at 12-10 which it would hold until a kill by Griffin Walters and an Anteater hitting error capped a 5-1 run that put the Matadors back on top 21-19 lead. Following a UCI timeout, the Anteaters would get a kill and a block to tie the score at 21-21. The teams would trade sideouts until UCI took advantage of a kill and a Matador attack error to take set point  at 24-23. Following a CSUN timeout, an ace by Sani clinched the 25-23 win and the two set advantage.
SET 3
The Matadors appeared to be in position to force a fourth set after leading by as many as five (13-8) following a Wetter kill. A 6-2 run by the hosts trimmed the lead to one at 15-14 when the Matadors used a 4-1 run - highlighted by kills from Jano Tello and Wetter and a DeWeese ace - to open up a 19-15 lead. Still holding a comfortable five-point lead at 23-18, the Matadors saw UCI rally for five straight points to knot the score at 23-23 before the Anteaters completed the comeback, winning in extra points 28-26.
UP NEXT
The Matadors will conclude the regular season next weekend (Apr. 15-16) with two matches against Long Beach State. CSUN travels to Long Beach next Friday before hosting the Beach on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled for a 7 p.m. first serve.
