CSUN Offense Explodes in Season-Opening 20-5 Win
2/17/2023 5:37:00 PM | Baseball
CSUN starting pitcher Lucas Braun would get into trouble early against the Seawolves, allowing the first two batters to reach to start the game. A one-out hit from Shane Paradine gave the Seawolves an early lead but Braun induced a 6-4-3 double play to get out of further trouble. The right hander would go on to retire Stony Brook in order in the second inning.
The Matadors stranded two runners in the first inning but would turn things around in a big way in the bottom of the second. Two of the first three batters reached on singles to start before Shunsuke Sakaino drove in Luc Stuka on an RBI double. After Jakob Simons drew a four-pitch walk, Tarlow belted a grand slam that cleared the wall in right field to put the Matadors on top 5-1.
Stony Brook got a run back on a wild pitch in the third, however, CSUN responded in kind with another big inning. Sakiano knocked in another run with a single to left then Tarlow and Andrew Sojka followed with RBI singles as well. An Emanuel Dean walk loaded the bases again before Camarillo hit a towering grand slam to left field to extend the lead to 12-2.
In the fifth, the Matadors put up their second seven-run frame of the afternoon. Dean knocked in his first run as a Matador with a double while Camarillo added to his RBI total with a single. Joey Kramer, Mason Le, Simons and Tarlow also picked up an RBI apiece during the scoring spree.
Braun worked his way through six innings of work, surrendering a pair of runs in the fourth and a single tally in the sixth. He would strand the bases loaded though in the sixth inning, striking out the final two batters of the frame.
CSUN would get its 20th run of the day in the bottom of the seventh when Le hit a leadoff home run to right.
GAME NOTES
Graysen Tarlow's five-hit performance is the first for a Matador player since Nate Ring had five hits versus San Diego on March 26, 2013. His six RBI are also the most since Andrew Lucas drove in six in a win over UC Riverside on April 6, 2019. Tarlow's homer was his first of his career.
Seven of the Matadors' nine starters had multiple-hit games while all nine had at least one hit and one run scored. Mason Le went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI in the win. Jakob Simons, Emanuel Dean, Ali Camarillo, Luc Stuka and Shunsuke Sakaino also had two hits.
The Matador bullpen allowed just one hit over three shutout innings to close the contest. Freshman Jackson Bush pitched a scoreless sixth while Isaac Ontiveros and Neil Feist combined to retire the final six batters in order. Lucas Braun struck out nine batters in his six innings of work.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"We got a few of the jitters out. In a score that's lopsided, we try to get as many players into the game and get their feet wet as much as possible. Out of respect to our opponent and where we play, you can't do that to the full extent as much as you'd like. I'm happy with how they competed all nine innings.
We've been talking about it all year, if we're going to be a good offensive team, we have to have a high level of discipline. We end up hitting a couple of grand slams but I told the team in left field after the game that those grand slams don't happen without everybody in front being able to have those disciplined two-strike at-bats to put balls in play, to draw some walks and to really force their pitcher to come up and over the wide of the plate."
