Iowa Edges CSUN With Two in The Bottom of the Seventh

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—Iowa scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to defeat CSUN 4-3 in the final Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic game for the Matadors Saturday afternoon at Big League Dreams Park.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
Iowa (8-5) took the lead in the bottom of the first when Nia Carter scored all the way from second on a Denali Loecker's grounder to short. The Matadors tied the game in the top of the third. Sydney Freijanes doubled to begin the inning. Raegan Jackson successfully sacrificed Freijanes to third with a bunt. Freijanes scored on a Carys Murakami grounder to short.
Iowa regained the lead in the fourth on a Tristan Doster RBI single. Jordan Kaeka led off the fifth with a walk. Bella Mejia pinch-ran for Kaeka and moved to second on a Freijanes' sacrifice. Jackson singled to give CSUN runners on the corners. Murakami again tied the game, this time with a sac fly that plated Mejia.
The Hawkeyes threatened in the bottom of the fifth. Carter walked and moved to second when Taitanna Roman singled. Tory Bennett attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but she lined out to Mia Cortez at first. Lauryn Carranco, the second CSUN pitcher of the game, struck out Loecker before striking out Sammy Diaz looking to end the inning.
Kaylee Escutia led off the top of the sixth with a triple and scored the go-ahead run when Kylie Galindo reached on an error.
Carranco struck out Echo Mattiello to begin the bottom of the seventh. Carter singled up the middle. Roman singled down the left field line to advance Carter to second. Bennett singled up the middle to load the bases. Loecker's opposite field single to right scored Carter and Roman for the victory.
Devyn Greer pitched first six innings, giving up all four CSUN hits. She struck out five and walked two. Emma Henderson came on and threw a scoreless seventh to pick up the victory. Isabella Alonso started for the Matadors, giving two hits over the first three innings before Carranco entered the game. Carranco pitched 3.1 innings, striking out seven, scattering seven hits. Carter charted three of the nine Iowa hits.
UP NEXT
CSUN (5-9) travels to the University of Arizona Hillenbrand Invitational next weekend. The Matadors begin the tournament on Saturday morning against Texas A&M-Commerce. Coverage on FloSoftball begins at 8 a.m.
