CSUN is Edged in a Pair of Extra Inning Games on Opening Day
2/9/2023 10:46:00 PM | Softball
SAN DIEGO—CSUN opened the 2023 softball season with two extra-inning losses at the SDSU Kickoff Classic Thursday at SDSU Softball Stadium.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Today didn't end up how we wanted, but I am proud of this group and going extra innings in both games. Some good things happened, but we also gave both teams extra at-bats. We must make better adjustments at the plate and catch the routine outs. We told the team that both games should leave a feeling inside you that you don't like, and that's good. We now must use that to learn from and get back to being hungry tomorrow."
GAME 1
No. 22 Arizona State scored three times in the sixth and three in the eighth to come from behind to defeat CSUN 6-3 in eight innings in the opener.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth. A one-out Jordan Kaeka's RBI single plated pinch-runner Kennedy Gustin gave the Matadors the lead. Later in the inning, Mikayla Carman's double drove in Kaylee Escutia and Samantha Kwiatkowski to give the Matadors a 3-0 advantage.
ASU put the first two runners on in the top of the sixth before Makenna Harper's triple with one out drove in a pair to make it 3-2. Sara Kinch tied the score with a sacrifice fly that scored Harper.
Jazmyn Rollin led off the Sun Devils' seventh with a single. She advanced to second on an Allie Gardiner wild pitch. Kaeka threw Rollin out at third, attempting to steal. Savannah Price singled. Alexis Martinez, who started the game in the circle for the Matadors, returned to relieve Gardiner. She got Yanni Acuna to fly out before Emily Cazares posted a single, advancing Price to second. Jazmine Hill grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice to keep the game tied at three.
Carman singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Carys Murakami walked to give CSUN runners on first and second. ASU pitcher Marissa Schuld induced Gizella Vargas Sandoval to fly out to center to send the game to extra innings.
Playing under the international tiebreaker, Hill was placed at second. Schuld came to bat for the first time to begin the eighth. Schuld singled to left, with Hill taking third. Harper tripled for the second time, driving in both Hill and Schuld for the go-ahead runs. Sara Kinch singled in Harper for a 6-3 score.
Vargas Sandoval was placed at second to begin the bottom of the eighth. However, even with the runner in scoring position, Schuld retired CSUN to secure the victory.
Carman posted three of the six CSUN hits. Harper and Cazares both had two hits to pace Arizona State.
GAME 2
San Diego State turned back a CSUN seventh-inning rally to defeat the Matadors 5-4 in eight innings in the nightcap.
Both teams threatened in the first as each squad left two runners on. The Aztecs opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, receiving RBI from Bella Espinoza. However, a CSUN error resulted in SDSU scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth on Espinoza's RBI double and a Mac Barbara RBI single.
The Matadors got on the board in the top of the fifth when Kwiatkowski doubled in Bella Mejia. Callie Decker returned the lead to three in the bottom of the fifth when she homered with two outs.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Shaylan Whatman doubled. Maddie Padilla's single drove in Whatman. A Murakami single plated Padilla before Vargas Sandoval tied the game with a single that scored Murakami.
Jillian Celis doubled with one out in the bottom of the seventh for the Aztecs. AJ Murphy singled down the right field line to give the Aztecs runners on the corners. Lauryn Carranco struck out Decker for the second out. Taylor Okada grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice to send the game into extra innings.
Playing with the international rule once again, Breli Agbayani Shibao, a pinch-runner, was placed at second. Alexa Landeros successfully sacrificed the freshman to third. Mia Cortez hit a grounder to third, where Murphy threw home to get Agbayani Shiano at home.
Okada was placed at second to begin the bottom of the eighth. She moved to third on a Carraco wild pitch. Then, jade Ignacio singled to center for the game winning run.
Carman and Whatman both charted two hits to lead the Matadors. Carman was 5-for-7 in both games for CSUN. Four SDSU batters each tallied two hits for the Aztecs.
