Women's Soccer Opens Big West Slate at Hawai'i Before Hosting Portland State

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (0-7-1) opens Big West play on the road with a Thursday night matchup with Hawai'i. Kickoff is slated for 10 p.m. (PT). CSUN wraps up the weekend with its final non-conference match as the Matadors host Portland State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
HOW TO FOLLOW
Both matches this week will be broadcast on ESPN+. Ghizal Hasan has the call for Sunday's home match with Portland State.
LAST WEEK'S MATCHES
CSUN dropped a pair of home matches at Matador Soccer Field in last week's action. The Matadors fell to Idaho 5-1 on Thursday then suffered a 3-0 loss to fourth-ranked UCLA on Sunday.
Idaho struck first against CSUN, scoring in the opening minute of action before eventually building a 3-0 lead. The Matadors would hit the net for the first time this season in the 49th minute on a strike from Izabel Reyes. The Vandals though took back control of the game, scoring in the 58th and 68th minute of action to take the match.
The Bruins pressured the Matador defense for 90 minutes last Sunday but CSUN held UCLA to just five shots on frame out of 24 shots total. UCLA broke a scoreless tie in the 40th minute then connected on two goals in the second half.
MATADOR HEADLINES
Izabel Reyes' goal last week against Idaho was the first of her CSUN career. Reyes, who has been on the Matador roster since 2019, has played in 40 matches and notched two assists in her collegiate career. On the season, Reyes tops the Matadors with nine shots with four on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin has started all eight CSUN matches in goal this season. Mauldin had previously played in every minute this season but left Sunday's game against UCLA in the 39th minute after a collision with a Bruin player near the goal. Mauldin has recorded 35 saves to go with a 2.02 goals-against-average on the year.
CSUN holds an 8-10-3 record in Big West openers since joining the league in 2001. The Matadors will be opening Big West play on the road for the sixth consecutive season dating back to 2017.
SERIES HISTORY
CSUN holds an 11-6-1 all-time series lead over Hawai'i but the Rainbow Wahine have won three of the last four meetings. The Matadors dropped a 1-0 decision to Hawai'i last season in Northridge. Two seasons ago, CSUN prevailed in Honolulu 3-2 with Brooke Mobeck scoring the game winner.
The Matadors lead Portland State 7-2 all-time. Last season, CSUN claimed a 2-0 decision with Portland State on a brace from Cindy Arteaga. The Vikings previously snapped a six-game CSUN winning streak in the series with a 3-1 victory in Portland during the 2021 season.
SCOUTING HAWAI'I
The Rainbow Wahine have gone 1-2-2 on the season. Last week, Hawai'i fell at Air Force 3-1 before earning a 1-1 draw at UNLV. The team's one win this season came in a home match with Sacramento State by a 3-1 score. Prior to the season, the Bows were picked to finish seventh in The Big West. Hawai'i tops the league in goals per game, averaging 2.20. Amber Gilbert ranks fourth in The Big West in goals with four while Mia Foster is in sixth place with three goals. Sophie Augustin has played the most time in goal with five starts to go with a 2.13 GAA.

The Vikings hold a 1-5-0 record with their one victory coming against Division III Pacific (Ore.) by a 4-0 score. Portland State dropped two matches last week to Iowa State (2-0) and Utah Tech (1-0). Picked to finish seventh in the Big Sky this season, Portland State went 5-8-5 overall last season and in third place in the conference with a 4-2-2 mark. Abi Hoffman leads the squad with two goals while three others have hit the net this year. Natalie Cunningham has a 1.43 GAA in four starts in goal.
