CSUN Drops Big West Opener at Hawai'i, 2-1
9/15/2023 12:21:00 AM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN's second-half rally fell short in a 2-1 loss to Hawai'i in The Big West opener on Thursday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Ashly Torres hit the net for the first time in her career but the Matadors could not dig out of a two-goal deficit.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors nearly put together their first goal in the 13th minute when Ashley Cruz crossed a ball to the middle of the box. Paige Califf had room from 12 yards out in front of the net but missed high. In goal, Hayden Mauldin gave the Matadors a solid effort throughout the match, racking up five saves in the first half alone. However, Hawai'i broke through in the latter stages of the period beginning in the 34th minute. The Rainbow Wahine created the scoring chance off a corner kick with Krista Peterson heading the ball backward to Izzy Ayala who delivered a low shot that got through the hands of Mauldin into the net. The Bows picked up another goal in the 39th minute on a deep shot from Nohara Takayama.
Â
In the second half, Mauldin would keep the ball out of the net with four more saves, helping give the Matadors a chance to break through. CSUN finally cut the Hawai'i lead in half in the 59th minute via a set piece. Califf took a free kick and found Harlee Martin-Ditillo on the left side of the goal. Martin-Ditillo would one touch to an open Ashly Torres who left-footed a shot into the net. The Matadors looked for the equalizer for the remainder of the match but a comeback was not in the cards as Hawai'i controlled the clock down the stretch to secure the win.
Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
"First off, I want to give Hawai'i the credit they deserve. They finished two quality goals. We battled and just fell short. A lot of good things I want to highlight and fix a few small things. We have a quick turnaround so mentally and physically we need to regroup and get ready for the next one."
