CSUN Track & Field Heads to Mt. SAC Relays

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field sets its sights on the Mt. SAC Relays this week in Walnut, Calif. The Matadors will send a dozen student-athletes to the meet with events beginning on Friday and running through Saturday.

On Friday, the men's team will send Joey Nations to compete in the long jump while Elijah Ignacio and Guillermo Lopez are set to compete in the shot put and Bryson Williams and Dillon Peters will take part in the triple jump event. A day later, Trey Knight will participate in the hammer throw invitational as well as Tylor Connelly and Joseph Alipranti in a separate hammer throw competition.
CSUN's women's team will have the trio of Amani Britton, Katherine Shipp-Davis and Emily Hutchinson compete in the shot put on Friday. Shipp-Davis is also scheduled to compete in the discus throw.
PHILLIPS TAKES HOME BIG WEST HONOR AGAIN
Senior David Phillips, Jr. collected his second Big West Track Athlete of the Week award of the season after an outstanding showing at the Beach Invitational last week. Phillips took home a pair of first-place finishes. He would grab first place in the 200m with a wind-aided time of 20.44 while he finished in third in the 100m with a wind-aided time of 10.01. Phillips also was first as a member of the 4x100m relay team that posted a time of 39.29. He previously received the Big West Track Athlete of the Week award on March while he won it once in 2023.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN took part in four meets last week: Long Beach State's Beach Invitational and Pacific Coast Invitational, UCLA Legends Invitational and Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational. Over the four meets, CSUN posted seven total first-place finishes with six on the men's side and one on the women's team.
At the Beach Invitational, Phillips won the 200m with a time of 20.44 while he teamed with Tosh Black, James Crawford and Chase Mars to win the 4x100m relay at 39.47. Trey Knight also took home first place in the hammer throw at LBSU, throwing at 75.71m (248-4). At UCLA, the men's team posted three more first-place performances as Joey Nations won the long jump at 6.93m (22-9), Elijah Ignacio won the discus with a toss of 48.07m (157-8) and Ja'Patrick Smith took first place in the 1500m with a time of 4:06.87. Anastasia Bampali would win the triple jump at UCLA with a leap of 11.55m (37-10.75). Emily Hutchinson also had a strong showing at UCLA in the javelin as she set a PR at 35.84m (117-7) to finish second.
CSUN IN THE RANKINGS
The Matador men's team enters play this week ranked 14th in the west region and 43rd overall in the nation. CSUN's women's team is ranked at No. 32 in the west region.
UP NEXT
CSUN will compete in two meets as the team makes its final preparations for the Big West Championships beginning in two weeks. Next weekend, the Matadors head to UC Irvine's Steve Scott Invitational from April 26-27 while the team will also participate at the University of Arizona's Desert Heat Classic on April 27.
