CSUN Notches Top Performances at Arizona and UCI

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field competed in a pair of meets in the team's final tuneup before the Big West Outdoor Championships. The Matadors had a handful of top-10 school records reached at the Desert Heat Classic at the University of Arizona while a slew of personal records was registered at UC Irvine's Steve Scott Invitational.
Desert Heat Classic - April 27
MEN
Chris Pitts rewrote his 400m school record with a new PR of 46.18 to finish seventh while De Marq Jaque posted the seventh-best time in school history at 47.11 to place 16th.
Chase Mars would lead the team in the 100m, posting the second-best time in school history with a time of 10.25 to finish fifth on the day. James Crawford was seventh in the event with a wind-aided time of 10.28.
CSUN had three top-15 finishes in the 200m with David Phillips, Jr. pacing the team with a fourth-place finish of 20.70. Crawford registered a new PR of 20.89 to place ninth and post the sixth-best time in school history. Mars had a solid showing at the event as well, finishing 11th at 20.95. Rounding out the sprint races, Tosh Black, Phillips, Crawford and Mars were fourth in the 4x100 relay at 39.30.
In jumps, Bryson Williams took third place in the triple jump with a leap of 14.86m (48-9) while Joey Nations was ninth in the long jump at 7.34m (24-1).
WOMEN
CSUN's women 4x100 relay team of Kaliyah Poston, Ciella Seals, Jada Reese and Arianna Alexander were 15th with a time of 45.62.
In the 100m, Alexander led CSUN with a 24th-place finish at 11.77. Jada Reese was 39th in the 200m with a time of 24.72 while she took 40th place in the 100m at 12.00.
Steve Scott Invitational - April 26-27
MEN
Ja'Patrick Smith's performance highlighted the meet with a first-place finish in the mile run with a personal record time of 4:22.07. Smith would also place 16th in the 800m invite with a time of 1:57.01. In other distance races, Ramiro Mateos was fifth in the 3000m steeplechase with a personal record of 9:37.79 and Camilo Torres was ninth with a time of 9:49.67. Cesar Cuevas paced the team in the 5000m race with a time of 15:17.35 to finish ninth. Ethan Smith was also 34th in an 800m event at 2:16.63.
In sprints, Gabe Martinez was fourth in the 400m with a time of 48.64 followed by Ehinome Inegbenoise in eighth place at 49.35, Luke DaVanon in 12th place at 50.10 and Xavier Bradford in 15th place at 50.30. In the 200m event, Wyatt Wiggins, Jr. was seventh with a time of 21.61 while Martinez was 16th at 22.05 and Inegbenoise was 17th with a PR of 22.08. Shamil Youngblood posted a PR in the 100m with a time of 10.76, and he was followed by Wiggins in 14th place at 10.78 and Christopher Allen in 16th place at 10.83.
Zavion Harper competed in a pair of hurdle events, posting a new PR time of 54.06 in the 400m-hurdles to place fourth while his time of 14.64 was seventh best in the 110m-hurdles.
In the hammer throw, Joseph Alipranti finished fourth with a toss of 60.40m (198-2) while Tylor Connelly recorded a PR of 55.22 (181-2) to place seventh. In the discus, three Matadors cracked the top-15 with Elijah Ignacio finishing fifth with a throw of 51.63m (169-5) followed by Guillermo Lopez in 12th at 44.12m (144-9) and Tui Edwin in 14th at 43.14m (141-6). Lopez was seventh in the shot put, registering a time of 15.70m (51-6.25) while Santiago Cerda was eighth with a PR of 15.33m (50-3.50), Francisco Isiordia was 10th at 14.15m (46-5.25) and Matthew Hodges was 15th at 12.86m (42-2.25).
In the long jump, Tzu-Ting Chan was 10th as he tied his PR of 7.06m (23-2). Jonrich Dela Cruz finished 12th in the long jump with a PR of 7.03m (23-0.75). Chan also competed in the triple jump and finished 11th at 13.78m (45-2.50).
WOMEN
Katherine Shipp-Davis was one of the top performers of the week, leading the Matadors in the discus with a second-place finish at 47.82m (156-10). Three others cracked the top-10 in the discus as well with Amani Britton taking seventh place at 44.26m (145-2), Treasure Brown finishing ninth at 42.83m (140-6) and Emily Hutchinson placing 10th at 39.93m (131-0).
In hammer throw, Hutchinson led the way with a PR toss of 49.16m (161-3) to place sixth while Marina McNeil-Vivanco was 11th at 43.36m (142-3), Myli Level was 12th with a PR of 43.27m (141-11) and Ada Murray was 15th with a PR of 42.40m (139-1). Hutchinson also topped CSUN in the shot put with a throw of 14.09m (46-2.75) to place fifth. Britton took ninth in the shot put with a PR of 13.29m (43-7.25) and Brown was 16th with a new PR of 11.69m (38-4.25).
In the high jump, Naomi Sachs finished fifth with a leap of 1.56m (5-1.25) followed by Audrie Reuss in eighth at 1.51m (4-11.50). Zola Grey was 17th in the long jump as she registered a 5.37m (17-7.50).
Charis Wondercheck was seventh in the 400m-hurdles with a PR of 1:04.01 followed by Genesis Washington in ninth at 1:08.96. Washington led the team in the 100m-hurdles, posting a time of 14.48 to place 15th while Wondercheck was 17th with a new PR of 14.53.
In distance races, Mariah Changco took eighth place in the 3000m steeplechase at 11:52.87 and Elin Markarian finished 12th with a PR of 12:17.18. Leann Hamilton picked up a 17th-place finish in the 800m invite at 2:17.53 while Ouanessa Nana was 19th in the 800m at 2:33.89, Markarian was 19th in the mile run at 5:30.55 and Vanessa Avila was 23rd in the 5000m at 19:15.82
In sprint races, Raeshell Austin placed 12th in the 400m with a time of 1:00.07 followed by Hannah Urgino in 17th at 1:02.43. Urgino was also 29th in the 200m with a time of 26.41.
ACCORDING TO COACH JUSTIN JOHNSON
"The team was split between two meets this weekend and both meets produced some great results. We continue to perform at a high level as a team. We have two weeks to go before conference. We will take this time to sharpen up and get healthy, but we will be ready for Big West."

CSUN sets its sights to the 2024 Big West Outdoor Championships in San Luis Obispo. The championships begin with multi-events from May 3-4 before the rest of the events take place from May 10-11.
