CSUN Fires Second Round 287, Moves Into Sixth at Big West Championship

LA QUINTA, Calif. - The CSUN men's golf team fired the second-lowest team round of the day to move up two spots into sixth place after 36 holes of the 2024 Big West Men's Golf Championship Monday at La Quinta Country Club.
After carding a team score of 19-over 307 in round one on Sunday, the Matadors posted a 20-shot improvement on Monday. coming in at 1-under 287. CSUN moved up from eighth into sixth place at 18-over 594 for the championship.
In the team standings, Long Beach State (567) overtook round one leaders Cal State Fullerton (570) while Cal Poly (575) remained third. The rest of the field includes UC Irvine (580), UC Davis (588), the Matadors (594), Hawai'i (601), UC Santa Barbara (603), and UC Riverside (615).
Individually, Antoine Sale continues to pace CSUN as he remained 11th following an even-par 72 in round two. Sale had birdies on three of his opening six holes to get as low as 3-under. A bogey at No. 9 sent him to the back nine at 2-under. His fourth birdie of the day at No. 11 moved Sale back to 3-under before finishing 3-over on his final seven holes. At 1-over 145 for the championship, Sale opens the final round just one shot out of the top 10 and four shots out of the top five.

"We're good enough to shoot under-par by double digits tomorrow and I'd love to see us battle for a top-five spot. Having the second-lowest round of the day, we definitely put ourselves in a position to do that. This team is far too talented to play like we did on Sunday and I'm hoping we can put together a really good final round tomorrow."Â
The Matadors will be paired with UC Irvine and UC Davis for the final round which gets underway Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m. off the No. 1 tee. Thomassen will tee-off first for CSUN, followed by McDonough (8:10), Burou (8:20), Schrott (8:30), and Sale (8:40).

- Senior Felix Schrott is also bidding for his second straight top-20 finish at the championship. Tied for 28th after an opening round 4-over 76. Schrott had one birdie, one bogey, and 16 pars on Monday to also finish at even-par 72. Schrott opens Tuesday's final round one of four players tied for 20th at 4-over 148.
- Thomas Burou had CSUN's low round of the day, posting an eight-stroke improvement from round one to round two. Burou had four birdies and three bogeys in finishing the day at 1-under 71. He was as low as 2-under after his fourth birdie at No. 13 before finishing 1-over the rest of the round. Burou is currently tied for 28th at 6-over 150.
- Brandon McDonough, tied for 30th at 7-over 151, posted a team-high five birdies on Monday, three coming on the front nine where he made the turn at 3-under. McDonough added two more birdies on the back nine, but also had five bogeys to become the third Matador to finish the day at even-par 72.Â
- Eirik Thomassen bounced back from an 11-over 83 in round one to post one eagle and one birdie in a round of 2-over 74 in round two. Thomassen was 2-under through eight holes before finishing his final 10 holes at 4-over 4-over which moved him into 42nd place at 13-over 157.
