NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN men's golf team is set to open the 2024 Big West Men's Golf Championship on Sunday, Apr. 28 in La Quinta. Nine teams will play 54 holes over three days (Apr. 28-30) in a battle for the conference crown and a berth in the 2024 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Regional field.
For the fourth straight year, the three-day championship will be contested at La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta. The Matadors are seeded fourth in the championship and will be paired with No. 5 seed UC Davis and No. 6 seed Hawai'i for Sunday's opening round.
Last year, CSUN finished fourth on the same La Quinta course posting a three-round score of 2-under 862 (281-297-284), which was its best three-round total at the conference championship since 2017. Felix Schrott was the low Matador, tying for fourth in the 45-player field at 4-under par 212. Schrott also tied for fourth in 2022 which matched Blake Brothers' fourth place finish in 2021. Felix Mory won the Matadors' last individual title at Sandpiper GC in Santa Barbara in 2017.
Long Beach State is the defending champion after completing a wire-to-wire win at the 2023 championship. The Beach finished at 12-under 852 to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. Baron Szeto of Cal Poly hit the turn at 4-under in the final round and added back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11 to come in a 6-under 66, for the low round of the day. Cal State Fullerton's Russell Howlett was next to join with a 5-under 211 on the day. Playing in the last grouping on the course, Long Beach State's Ian Gilligan recorded a 1-under 71 to secure a spot in the sudden-death playoff. Gilligan came up clutch and took claimed the individual honor, besting the tiebreaker on the 412-yard par-4 18th hole for the second time of the day.Â
As a team, the Matadors have three top five finishes along with four top-10 finishes this season. CSUN posted a season-best second place finish at the Vanharte Orange County Collegiate in February and was also third at the Bill Cullum Invitational in October.
Antoine Sale comes into the championship leading CSUN with a 70.63 scoring average. Schrott is second at 71.15 followed by Eirik Thomassen (72.79), Brandon McDonough (73.33), and Thomas Burou (73.77). Dillon Jonke, who comes in with a 75.34 scoring average, will serve as CSUN's alternate at the championship.
The Matadors are seeking their best conference championship finish since finishing second in 2017. Behind Mory's individual win, CSUN's 2017 finish was its best conference finish since winning the Big Sky Conference championship in 2000. The Matadors have three third place Big West Championship finishes in 2004, 2008 and again in 2011.
