INDOOR: Opened the season by winning the 800m at the Lumberjack Challenge Jan. 17 (1:55.07)...ran on CSUN's 4x400m relay at the Lumberjack Challenge, finishing third (3:25.68)...placed sixth in the mile (4:25.13) at the Feb. 1 New Mexico Team Open...ran 1:53.08 in the 800m during the Husky Classic Feb. 15 to finish 17th...came in 19th in the mile at the MPSF Championships Feb. 29 (4:20.25).

OUTDOOR: Did not compete.
INDOOR: Did not compete.
CROSS COUNTRY: Was the Matadors’ top finisher in all six events…placed fourth at the Big West Championships (24:41.40)…ran 33:32.60 over the NCAA Regional 10k course Nov. 9…finished third at the Highlander Invitational (24:33.30)…ran a career best 8k time of 24:32.70 to come in 12th at the UC Riverside Invitational Sept. 15…was 14th in the Sept. 29 Captial Cross Challenge (24:41.80)…opened the campaign Sept. 1 at the Mark Covert Classic by finishing seventh (24:59.90).
2018 (R-SOPHOMORE)
OUTDOOR: Finished fourth in the 1500m (3:57.59) and was 11th in the 5000m (14:53.59) at the Big West Championship…ran the 10th fastest 1500m time in school history 3:49.68, when he finished second at the Mar. 24 Northridge Invitational…won the mile run at the Mar. 10 CSUN All Comers (4:22.42)…was second in the 5000m in the Apr. 7 Pomona-Pitzer Invitational (14:52.06) and was second in the 600m at the CSUN All Comers (1:21.03).
INDOOR: Recorded the fourth fastest 800m time in school history, 1:51.56, when he placed fifth at the Jan. 19 University of New Mexico Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational…finished 10th in the 800m at the Feb. 9 Husky Classic (1:53.87) and came in 10th again in the 800m at the MPSF Championship (1:53.42)…a part of the CSUN distance medley relay that reset school record in the event as the team finished sixth at the MPSF’s in a time of 9:57.95.
CROSS COUNTRY: Competed in all five meets and was CSUN's top finisher in three of the Matadors' five meets…was the runner-up at the season opening Pepperdine Invitational (Sept. 1) after clocking a 5k time of 15:44.06…also finished in the top-five at The Master's Invitational (Sept. 30) after posting an 8k time of 25:22…led the Matadors at the UCR Highlander Invitational (Oct. 14) with a time of 18:17.6 (6k) which was good for 14th…placed 27th at the Big West Championship, posting a time of 25:27.
2017 (R-FRESHMAN)
OUTDOOR: Ran one event, the 5000m at the Ben Brown Invite Mar. 10, running a time of 16:15.04.
INDOOR: Was entered in four meets…ran the 800m twice (the MPSF Championship, UW Open), the mile twice (Armory Track Invitational and New Mexico Cherry & Silver), and the 1500m once (Armory, 4:03.35)...second best 800m time was 1:53.42 occurred during the UW Open…best mile time was 4:18.98 was at the Armory Track Invitational…ran on the CSUN distance medley relay at the MPSF Championship.
CROSS COUNTRY: Competed in all six meets for the Matadors…clocked an 8k season best of 25:24.93 to place 28th at the season-opening UCR Invitational…finished 16th at the UCR Highlander Invitational in a 6k time of 18:28.30…was 49th at the Big West Championship (27:21.2) and 134th at the NCAA Regional (32:32.3).
2016 (REDSHIRT): Sat out the season as a redshirt in the CSUN track and field program.
CROSS COUNTRY: Competed in four of seven meets as a freshman…was the Matadors' low finisher in the final three meets of the season…finished a team best 36th at the Big West Championship (25:51.16) and was 154th at the NCAA West Regional in Seattle, Wash. (34:28.4)…season best finish was a 23rd place at the Highlander Invitational where he ran 18:40.14.
HIGH SCHOOL: A 2015 graduate of John Marshall High School (Hollywood, Calif.)…coach was Florencio Gonzales…was the triple LA City Section champion in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters...went on to finish eighth in 800 meter state championship…was the Puerto Rico national champion in cross country...top high school times were 1:55 (800), 4:15.(1,600) and 9:11 (3,200)…graduated with a 3.6 grade point average.
PERSONAL: Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico…son of Jeffrey Merchan and Gabriela Abreu…a film major...favorites include the MMA fighter Conor McGregor, actors Denzel Washington and Will Smith, “Game of Thrones" and the movie “Cars”…the most famous person he has met is Jamie Foxx..says the best thing about being an athlete is “getting to travel around the world and being healthy.”
