
Naumann, Merchan Lead CSUN at Capitol Cross Challenge

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Rachel Naumann finished 29th to lead the CSUN women's cross country team at the Capital Cross Challenge at Haggin Oaks Golf Course on Saturday, Michael Merchan led the Matador men by placing 89th.
Naumann ran 21:30.2 over the 6K course to pace the CSUN women. Rachael Duriez ranked second on the team and 95th overall in a time of 22:34.2 and was followed by Katie Alvarenga (115th/22:59.5), Jasmine Vasquez (140th/23:40.6), Kimberly Newton (142nd/23:43.1), Cynthia Martinez (143rd/23:45.4), Bianca Frausto (151st/23:58.6) and Cynthia Kelso (171st/25:24.0).
As a team, the Matador women scored 343 points and clocked an average time of 22.5. Arizona State won the women's team title with 60 points.
On the men's side, Merchan clocked a time of 25:29.0 to pace CSUN, which was good for 89th out of 173 runners. Charlie Nettle followed as the her placed 102nd in a time of 25:42.4. Also placing for the Matador men were Mario Ramirez (124th/26:13.6), Ricardo Garcia (127th/26:16.7), James Silva (139th/26:43.3), Elias Powell (146th/26:55.5), Luis Munoz (150th/27:01.2), Lugardo Chavez (159th/27:43.4), Christopher Pinelo (161st/27:49.5) and Manuel Vargas (162nd/27:50.7).
The Matadors posted a total of 288 points, running an average time of 26.0. Chico State captured the men's team title with 29 points.
CSUN cross country will next compete at the Highlander Invitational in Riverside on Oct. 15.
