Matador Men Claim Five Event Titles at Meet

HONOLULU --- The CSUN men's and women's track & field programs excelled in Honolulu at the 2017 Rainbow Relays on the campus of the University of Hawai'i this past weekend. On the women's side, the Matadors claimed five individual titles in events ranging from the 100m dash to the shot put. The men's team .won six events at the competition, sweeping the discus, shot put and hammer throw as well as the 100m dash coupled with the women's victory.Â
Women's Recap
The CSUN women put together a strong outing in the tropics as they prepare for the upcoming Big West Outdoor Championship. Lexis Lambert won the 100m in 11.80 seconds, the only competitor to finish in less than 12 seconds. Kayla Pickens was third and Sydney Berry was fourth in the event.Â
Marie Veale captured the 100m-hurdles in a time of 13.94, finishing as the only competitor to post a sub-14 second time. In other track results, Pickens was the Matadors' top finisher in the 200m at 25.71 seconds to place second. Serena Felicity was fourth in the 200m at 26.06 while the 4x400m relay team of Pickens, Felcitiy, Isabel Leonard and Uhunoma Edobor placed third in 4:13.47.Â
In field events, Gardenia Centanaro and Alyana Nicolas finished 1-2 in the pole vault. Centanaro, the school record holder in the event and defending Big West Champion, cleared 4.07m (13-04.25) to claim the top spot while Nicolas finished second on jumps by clearing 3.65m (11-11.75). For Centanaro, the height represents a new career best and school record, improving on her previous mark by a centimeter.
Tiarah Umu took home the event title in the shot put, heaving a throw of 14.55m (47-08.75) Elena Lopez was third at 13.98m (45-10.75) in the event. In the discus, Brianna Cueva won the event with a toss of 52.43m (172-00.25). The defending Big West Champion in the event, Cueva was the only competitor to clear 50m in the event. Monique Griffiths placed second (48.14m, 158-00) and Umu was third (47.57m, 156-00) in the event.Â

The CSUN men also enjoyed their time in Hawai'i, taking home six individual titles. Johnathan Warren won the 100m dash in 10.94 seconds, the only competitor to post a sub-11 second time in the event. Kiyoshi Johnson was third at 11.08 in the event. Warren also was the team's top finisher in the 200m, placing second in a time of 22.13 seconds.Â
Anthony Teart won the 400m-hurdles in a time of 54.34 seconds while Francisco Hurtado ran 55.45 to place third. The Matadors' 4x100m relay team of Kurt Felicitas, Andre McBride, Warren and Johnson won in a blistering time of 41.55 seconds to edge Sacramento State.Â
In the field events, the Matadors' contingent of throwers dominated the action. Zachary Rosales won the shot put with a new personal-best heave of 17.70m (58-00.75) and was followed by Dawaun Lucas (17.29m, 56-08.75) and Clint Meyer (16.31m, 53-06.25) to give CSUN the top three spots on the podium.Â
The defending Big West Champion in the event, Daniel Swarbrick won the discus with a throw of 54.05m (177-04). Chris Brown wrapped up the sterling performances from the men's throwers as he won the hammer throw with a toss of 54.29m (178-01.50). Jacob Harbin was third in the event at 45.93m (150-08.25). Other field events saw Tevin Limon (4.40m, 14-05.25) and Logan Cantrell (4.25m, 13-11.25) place second and third, respectively, in the pole vault.Â
