NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUNÂ beach volleyball team split a Sunday tri-dual, defeating CSU Bakersfield before falling to seventh-ranked Long Beach State at the Matador Beach Volleyball Facility.
The Matadors (2-1) opened the tri-dual Sunday morning against CSU Bakersfield and won all three matches in the first flight. Erin Indermill and Daniella Molinari got CSUN on the board in the No. 4 match, defeating Briannah Mariner and Sidney Wicks 21-10, 21-12.
Kristey Markle and Nickeisha Williams then swept Sydney Haynes and Emily Hansen 23-21, 23-16 at No. 2, before the Matador duo of Shawnee De Oliveira and Cassidy Rosso won the exhibition match by the score of 21-18, 24-22.
The Roadrunners held off a CSUN win at No. 3 when Mattison DeGarmo and Emily Lopes handed the Matador pair of Lauren McMurray and Autumn Russell a 21-19, 21-19 setback. But CSUN quickly claimed the match when the No. 1 contest went final with the Matadors' Katie Sato and Aeryn Owens winning 23-21, 23-16. Nicolette Pinkney and Lauren Conati then were stretched to three sets at No. 5 as CSUN closed the first match with a 21-15, 17-21, 15-13 thriller.
After Long Beach State swept the Roadrunners 5-0 in the middle match, the Matadors took on the No. 7 49ers in the final dual match of the day.
Sasha Karelov and Anete Brinke picked up Long Beach's first win of the dual at No. 2, sweeping Markle and Williams by the score of 21-13, 21-10. Emma Krist and Clarie Newlander then topped De Oliveira and Rosso in the extra match 21-9, 21-19.
The No. 4 match then went final as the Beach's Nicci Reinking and Zoi Konstantopolou swept Indermill and Molinari 21-19, 21-10 to take all three matches in the first flight.
Long Beach State then sealed the dual win after the No. 3 match concluded with a 21-15, 21-10 win for Hailey Harward and Kristyna Adamcikova over McMurray and Russell. Hannah Matt and Marisa Ramsey then defeated Pinkney and Conati 22-20, 21-16 in the No. 5 match before the No.1 match went the distance.
Sato and Owens were the first Matador duo to take a set against the 49ers, winning the second frame 21-18 after dropping set one in extra points 22-20. Long Beach's Rachel Nieto and Nele Barber, however pulled out a 15-12 win in the deciding set, taking advantage of a pair of CSUN service errors down the stretch.
"We saw two completely different teams today and I think each pair, one through six, learned something about themselves and their competition," said CSUNÂ head coach Noelle Rooke. "I'm pleased with the win against Bakersfield and proud of the fight and battle all of our pairs had against Long Beach State."
CSUN continues its season-opening five-match homestand this Thursday (Mar. 8) as the Matadors host a tri-dual against Concordia-Irvine and Cal State Los Angeles.
