CSUN Wins Five Times on Final Day of Big West Championships

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The CSUN Men's and Women's Track & Field teams won five times as the 2019 Big West Track & Field Championships came to a close on Saturday at UC Santa Barbara's Pauley Track.
MEN
A day removed from running the fastest time in the 110m hurdles' preliminaries, Bashiru Abdullahi continued his fantastic freshman season by winning the finals in a time of :13.80. His performance was the second fastest time in school history. Abdullahi also scored in the 400m hurdles with a seventh place showing (:53.99).
Ahmed Mohamed took home top honors in the triple jump. His leap of 50-8 edged second-place Drew Xandrine-Anderson of UC Davis by 2.5 inches. Mathieu Tshani would place third in the triple jump by going 49-3 ½.
Senior Antonio Garcia earned a spot on the podium in the 110m hurdles as he placed third in the event with his time of :14.09. Armon Hunter was fourth in the discus with a toss of 175-1.
Senior Parker Caston finished fifth in the 400-meter dash, putting up a mark of :47.31, a season best for Caston and the Matadors. His time is the 10th fastest in school history. Caston would come back to place sixth in the 200m by running a season best :21.53 (also the best 200m time for a CSUN runner this season).
Mario Ramirez turned in a time of 1:53.47 to finish fifth in the 800m. Omari Williams' :11.27 in the 100m resulted in an eighth-place finish.
CSUN began the day by taking second place in the 4x100m relay with Ben Hibbert, Parker Caston, Abdullahi and Williams running the event in a time of :40.91 seconds, earning the Matadors eight points on the day. The 4x400m relay of Caston, Andre Butt, Brenden Scott, and Ramirez scored by coming in sixth with a time of 3:15.48.
As a team, the Matadors finished sixth with 85 points. Long Beach State (169.5) was the men's team champion.
WOMEN
Sydney Mosley reset the CSUN school record in the 100m hurdles by running a time of :13.19 to win the race. Mosley broke the previous school mark of :13.35 which was set by Courtney Robinson in 2018. It was Mosley's fourth win of the season in the 100m hurdles and just missed the Big West record in the event of :13.11 which was set by Idaho's Angela Whyte in 2011. Mosley returned later in the meet to come in fourth in the 100m (:11.91).
The 4x400m relay of De'Andreah Young, Mosley, Lena Kandissounon, and Brianna Gilchrist won the 4x400m relay by posting a 3:40.53 performance.
Brandy Williams won the shot put with a toss of 54-3 3/4. It was a personal best for Williams and was the second-best mark in school history (Beth Burton holds the school record of 54-8 3/4 which was set in 1998).
Immanuela Aliu ran the 100m in a time of :11.59 to earn second place. Aliu posted her second runner-up showing of the championship when she posted a time of :23.55 in the 200m.
Young was second in the 400m hurdles (:57.76). Ty Wallace took home second place in the triple jump with a leap of 40-11 ½. A new personal best in the event, Wallace' mark is the 10th best in school history.
Kandissounon was the runner-up in the 800m when she ran 2:05.95. She would later finish second in the 400m with the eighth quickest time in school history, :53.87.
Gilchrist was fifth in the race with a time of :55.62.
After scoring only 14 points on day one of the meet, CSUN recorded 87 points on Saturday to finish fifth (101). Cal State Fullerton (129.5) was the women's team champion.
