Hawai'i Tops CSUN 3-1 in Season Finale

HONOLULU, O'ahu – In her final collegiate match, senior Seyvion Waggoner had a team-high 11 kills on .310 hitting in CSUN's 3-1 loss to Hawai'i in a Big West Conference match Friday night at Simplifi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
The Matadors finish the season with an overall record of 7-23 overall and 6-14 in the Big West Conference. With the win, the Rainbow Wahine claim the Big West regular season championship at 21-6 overall and 18-1 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Waggoner connected for 11 kills to go with four digs while fellow senior Nicole Nevarez added eight kills (.129) and 14 digs in her collegiate finale.
• Sophomore Lauryn Anderson got off to a solid start before finishing the match with seven kills (.167) and one block.Taylor Orshoff and Lexi McLeod each chipped in nine kills while McLeod added six digs and one block in her final CSUN match.
• CSUN's final senior Makayla Bradford notched 20 digs along with four assists in her CSUN finale.
• Setters Carisa Barron and Madison Klungel each had 14 assists while Barron added 10 digs for the fifth double-double of her freshman season.
• CSUN was out-hit .279 to .164 by Hawai'i which also had 10 blocks to the Matadors' four.
• Amber Igiede led three Hawai'i hitters in double figures with a match-high 16 kills (.382) to lead the Rainbow Wahine.
FIRST SET
Kills from Anderson and Orshoff gave the Matadors an early 2-1 lead and CSUN would not trail again in the opening set. The Matadors held several two-point leads before Waggoner's kill gave CSUN a three-point edge (15-12) at the media timeout. An attack error by the Rainbow Wahine increased the lead to 16-12 and the Matadors maintained a four-point cushion (18-14) following a McLeod kill. Hawai'i then rallied behind a 7-3 run to knot the score at 21-21 before CSUN closed the set on a 4-2 run to take the set 25-23 on Waggoner's sixth kill of the frame.
SECOND SET
The Rainbow Wahine jumped out to a 7-3 lead and would not look back in evening the match at one set apiece. Trailing 10-4, the Matadors scored twice to trim the deficit to 10-6 following a Hawai'i setting error. Two straight points by the Rainbow Wahine forced a CSUN timeout at 12-6. Hawai'i then used an 8-3 run to open up a 20-9 lead before a Layla Cederlind served an ace to pull the Matadors within 20-11. Hawai'i would claim five of the final six points in a 25-12 win.
THIRD SET
Hawai'i scored the first five points of the third set forcing an early Matador timeout. The Rainbow Wahine extended the run to 6-0 before the Matadors would get on the board on a Hawai'i hitting error. The hosts would lead by as many as eight at 14-6 before an Anderson kill fueled a 3-0 CSUN run which trimmed the gap to 14-9. The Matadors remained within five at 18-13 following a Nevarez kill before Hawai'i scored twice to push the lead back to seven (20-13). Consecutive kills by Waggoner again pulled CSUN within five (20-15) before the Matadors would ultimately get within three at 22-19 after a Barron ace. But the hosts claimed the final three points of the set in a 25-19 win.
FOURTH SET
A kill by Nevarez opened the fourth set when Hawai'i scored four of the next five to take a 4-2 lead. An Orshoff block pulled the Matadors within one at 4-3 and CSUN remained within one at 5-4 when the Rainbow Wahine used a kill and a CSUN miscue to open up a 7-4 lead. The Matadors battled back to within one following a McLeod kill (8-7) and again after a Waggoner kill (9-8) when Orshoff's kill would pulled CSUN even at 9-9. But an ensuing 9-2 run by Hawai'i boosted the lead back to 18-11 while forcing a CSUN timeout. Three more points by the Rainbow Wahine pushed the lead to 21-11 and Hawai'i would cruise to the 25-12 win and the 3-1 match victory,
