Matadors Drop Straight-Set Decision at No. 7 USC
2/10/2022 8:02:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Taking on its second ranked team this season, the CSUN Men's Volleyball team fell in straight sets to No. 7 USC in a non-conference match Thursday night at Galen Center.
Set scores were 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 as the Trojans improve to 10-2 while the loss snaps a three-match win streak for the Matadors who slip to 3-2.
KEY STATISTICS
• Redshirt sophomore Kyle Hobus led CSUN with eight kills but struggled to a -.107 hitting clip on 28 attacks.
• A trio of Matadors added seven kills each as Olumide Allen hit .500 on 10 swings, Luke Krzmarzick hit .136 on 22 attacks and Griffin Walters hit .111 on 18 swings. Walters also added a match-high 10 digs and had one of CSUN's two aces in the match. Krzmarzick had seven digs, a new CSUN career-high.
• Setter Donovan Constable registered 24 assists, seven digs and two blocks and had the Matadors' other ace in the loss.
• USC would out-hit the Matadors by the margin of .303 to .120 behind a match-high 13 kills from Sam Kobrine.
• The Matadors had a 34-27 advantage in team digs while the Trojans posted a slim 6.5-5.0 edge in team blocks. Each team had a pair of aces.
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"I thought our defense and passing were good enough to win tonight but our pin hitters struggled a little bit after playing so well over the past week. We just have to hit better than we did tonight but I thought our middles played well. The bottom line is we're better today than we were last week so we need to just keep building and getting better."
SET 1
After the hosts claimed the first two points of the match, kills by Hobus and Constable sent CSUN on a 3-1 run which knotted the score. But a Trojan kill on the ensuing gave USC a lead it would never relinquish. The Trojans extended the lead as many as four at 9-5 following a Matador hitting error when CSUN scored twice to stay within two. A Kobrine kill capped 6-3 run that would give USC its largest lead of the set at 15-10. The Trojans maintained a five-point lead at 20-15 when a USC service error was followed by consecutive Hobus kills which forces a Trojan timeout at 20-18. The Matadors would also get to within two at 22-20 following an Allen kill but USC would claim the final three points in a 25-20 win.Â
SET 2
Jano Tello's kill gave the Matadors an early 3-1 lead and CSUN would again lead by two (10-8) when a 6-0 run by the Trojans gave the hosts an 14-10 cushion. A USC service error was followed by a Walters kill and a Walters ace which pulled the Matadors within 14-13. Despite hitting -.062 in the set, CSUN remained within one at 17-16 when a Matador service error sent the Trojans on a set-clinching 8-2 run that closed out a 25-18 win.Â
 Â
SET 3
USC scored the first three points of the final set before CSUN took advantage of an Allen kill and a pair of miscues to knot the score at 3-3. The score remained tied at 7-7 when the hosts rallied for three straight points to lead 10-7. The Matadors trailed 15-11 at the media timeout when they rallied to tie things up at 22-22 on a Hobus kill. The teams remained tied at 23-23 when Gallus connected for a kill and Hobus' swing to keep CSUN in the match found the net sending USC to the 25-23 win.
