Matadors Fall in Straight Sets at 12th-Ranked Stanford
2/18/2022 3:49:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Griffin Walters led CSUN with 10 kills on 21 errorless attacks but the Matadors came up short in a straight-set loss to No. 12 Stanford Friday afternoon at Maples Pavilion.
Set scores were 25-13, 25-17, 26-24 as the Cardinal improve to 8-4 while the Matadors see their season record slip to 3-3. All three CSUN losses this season have come to teams ranked in the NVA/AVCA Top-15.
KEY STATISTICS
• Walters had one-third of CSUN's kills in the match as he knocked down a team-high 10 on 21 errorless swings to hit a season-high .476.
• Redshirt junior Ryan DeWeese came off the bench to add a season-high eight kills on .429 hitting which was also a season high.
• No other Matador hitter had more than four kills as CSUN wound up hitting .189 (30-16-74) as a team.Â
• Setter Donovan Constable posted 25 assists along with three digs and a team-high two blocks.
• Stanford hit an efficient .480 (44-8-75) as a team as Will Rottman led all hitters with 17 kills (.577). Nathaniel Gates also reached double figures with 10 kills on .615 hitting.
• Behind Rottman's three aces, the Cardinal had a 5-2 edge in service aces while also posting a 7.0-3.0 edge in blocks.
COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"I thought we got off to a slow start today but give Stanford credit, they served well and really affected us from the opening point. We stabilized some things and fought hard in the third set and we were right there. Overall, we weren't where we needed to be today but we'll continue to get better and get ready for St. Katherine next week."
SET 1
The Matadors surrendered five of the first six points of the match and trailed 7-2 after an attack by Kyle Hobus went wide. After a Rottman kill gave Stanford a seven-point lead (11-4), a Hobus kill sparked a 4-0 CSUN run that trimmed the deficit to three at 11-8. Following a Stanford timeout, the Cardinal rallied for six straight points to open up a 17-8 lead and the Matadors could not trim the margin to less than seven the remainder of the set.
SET 2
The hosts opened the second set in similar fashion as the first, leading 7-1 after eight points. CSUN would pull within 9-4 on a Stanford service error when the Cardinal put together a 6-1 run to extend the lead to 15-5. Hobus put away a Stanford overpass, pulling the Matadors within eight at 15-7 but the Cardinal would score two straight to force CSUN's second and final timeout. Stanford's lead would not drop below 10 the rest of the set as the Cardinal opened up a two-set lead following the 25-13 win.
 Â
SET 3
After not holding a lead in either of the first two sets, the Matadors used a Stanford hitting error to take their first lead of the match at 5-4. Another Cardinal hitting error boosted the CSUN lead to two at 7-5 and the Matadors maintained a two-point edge at 11-9 following a DeWeese kill. After Stanford knotted the score at 12-12, CSUN got a kill from Walters and a Jano Tello ace to again lead by two at 14-12. The Matadors would lead by two at 16-14 following a Jackson Payne kill and again at 21-19 when a Cardinal attack went long. Stanford would score following a timeout trimming the lead to 21-20 when DeWeese's kill kept CSUN's lead at two. Three straight Stanford points forced a Matador timeout at 23-22 before a Cardinal hitting error tied the score at 23-23. A CSUN service error gave Stanford match point at 24-23 when DeWeese connected sending the set to extra points. But the Cardinal would close the match with a Rottman kill and a team block to seal the 26-24 victory.
