COACH JEFF CAMPBELL SAID
"Both teams played high-level volleyball tonight. Sets two and three were both deuce games and we had some opportunities but didn't capitalize on them. Give Santa Barbara credit, they played well and did what it took to win. I'm proud of my guys, they played hard and gave it their all tonight."
SET 1
The Matadors dropped the first three points of the opening set and would never lead in the frame. After an Olumide Allen kill trimmed the lead to 4-2, the Gauchos used a 5-2 run to open up a 9-4 lead. The UCSB lead swelled to five at 11-6 before two more Gaucho points forced a CSUN timeout at 13-6. Down 14-6, the Matadors got back-to-back kills from Hobus and another from Bertozzi to pull within five at 14-9. But the Gauchos would quickly build the lead to eight (18-10) forcing a final Matador timeout. CSUN would trail by as many as 10 points (24-14) before the Matadors engineered a late 5-0 run to save five set points. The Gauchos converted their next swing following a timeout to take the set 25-19.
SET 2
After surrendering the first two points of the set, a Walters kill capped a 6-2 CSUN run that gave the Matadors a two-point lead. The Gauchos would tie the score at 6-6 and 7-7 before a Hobus kill pushed the CSUN lead back to two at 9-7. A Wetter kill kept the Matador lead at two (11-9) when two straight UCSB points tied the score. A Bertozzi kill would fuel a 3-0 CSUN run and the Matadors would also take a three-point lead (15-12) into the media timeout. CSUN would ultimately lead by as many as five (18-13) when Allen and Hobus teamed up to stuff a Gaucho attack. The Matadors were still in good shape at 20-15 when the Gauchos put together a 6-1 run to pull even at 21. Trailing by two points late, CSUN saved a pair of set points before a UCSB kill and an ace gave the Gauchos the 26-24 win.
SET 3
Needing a win to stay in the match, the Matadors led for a majority of the final set. A Wetter solo block gave CSUN an early 5-3 lead before the Matadors would lead by three (9-6) when Constable slammed down a UCSB overpass. CSUN maintained its three-point lead at 13-10 following a Gaucho hitting error but UCSB would rally to tie the score at 13-13 following a Dayne Chalmers kill. The Matadors would hold a one-point edge at the media timeout and would still lead by one at 20-19 when a UCSB serve went long. Three straight points by the Gauchos gave UCSB a 22-20 lead and the Matadors still trailed by two when the Gauchos had match point at 24-22. A pair of UCSB miscues saved a pair of match points before the Gauchos used a kill and an ace to pull out another 26-24 win.
