NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -Â The Matador men and women will compete in two meets this weekend in Northern California as the distance runners compete Friday at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival while the rest of the squad will be in action Saturday at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge in Sacramento.
CSUN will be busy Friday as virtually all of its distance runners will be in action in San Francisco. The meet opens Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. with the first round of the women's 10,000 meters. Elizabeth Nelson and Megan Magdaleno will be in the second round scheduled for 9:10 a.m. In the men's 10,000 meters, Angel Alcantar will run in the opening round at 10:25 a.m.
Seven Matador women will compete in the 1,500 with Jocelyne Ferrufino carrying the top time (4:44.96) of the CSUN runners competing. Ferrufino, Raeanna Cortez, Victoria Olaiz and Rachael Duriez are scheduled to run the 800 meters.
In the men's 1,500 meters, Anass Zouhry and Chafik Oussemgane will each make his 2015 outdoor debut after a highly successful indoor season. Geofry Sarco, Charlie Nettle, Ivan Sanchez and Luis Chavez are also scheduled to run the 1,500 for CSUN.
Zouhry, Nettle, Sarco and Higgins will also run the 5,000 meters while Oussemgane, along with teammates Alcantar and Jackson Higgins, will run the demanding 3,000 meter steeplechase. Arshaad Rahh, who has CSUN's top 800 meter time this season (1:56.78) will be in heat three while teammate Marcelo Rosales will run in the eighth and final heat.
Friday's races at the SF State Distance Carnival conclude with the sixth heat of the men's 5,000 meters at 5:49 p.m.
The Matadors will then turn their attention to Sacramento State's Mondo Mid-Major Challenge on Saturday as CSUN will send more than 50 student-athletes to the State Capitol.
The meet gets underway Friday at 9:30 a.m. with the women's hammer as Monique Griffiths looks to build on her school record throw from a week ago. The men's hammer follows while the remainder of the field events will conclude before the first track event, the women's 4x100 relay, at 11:45 a.m. The final event of the day is the men's 4x400 relay which is scheduled for 3:20 p.m.
"The meet in San Francisco gives us the opportunity to run some longer races," said CSUN head coach Avery Anderson. "Sacramento is a good place to compete, it hosted the USA Track & Field Championships last year so it's a great facility. We'll have most of our sprinters, jumpers, vaulters and throwers looking to get into mid-season form."Â
