Late Comebacks Power CSUN Past UCSB For Doubleheader Sweep

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—CSUN posted the game-winning runs in the top of the seventh in both ends of a Big West softball doubleheader at UC Santa Barbara Friday afternoon to take both ends of the twin bill from the Gauchos.

GAME 1
Behind a school and Big West record 13 walks, CSUN rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat UC Santa Barbara 7-5 in the opener.
Alexis Lemus singled to lead off the game. She advanced to third on back-to-back Lexy Mills wild pitches. Kennedi Sorensen grounded out too short with one out, which allowed Lemus to score. Mills walked three consecutive batters to load the bases before getting Sydney Freijanes to pop out to second to end the inning.
Sam Denenhy opened the bottom of the first with a single. A one-out Kenedee Jamerson walk to Rayna Cohen preceded a Mills infield single which loaded the bases. Teah Thies singled to right center to drive in a pair of runs. Tyler Goldstein grounded into a 1-5 fielder's choice for the second out. Ashley Donaldson walked to load the bases for the second time in the inning. Ally Nodohara grounded out to first for the final out.
The Gauchos recorded four hits in the bottom of the second, which resulted in two runs and a 4-1 lead. Mills walked five CSUN batters in the third inning. Aaliyah Swan and Mikayla Carman earned RBI as the Matadors cut the lead to 4-3.
Vinessa Nunez walked for the third time to lead off the CSUN fifth. Pinch-hitter Alexis Garcia successfully sacrificed Nunez to second. Swan returned the lead to the Matadors with a two-run home run to center to make it 5-4 in favor of CSUN.
Thies and Goldstein recorded consecutive singles to begin the bottom of the fifth. Allie Gardiner relieved Jamerson. Her first batter was Donaldson, who attempted to put down a sac bunt. She popped it up to third, where Nunez dove for the out. Nodohara grounded out to second as both runners moved up a base. Kori Thomas lined out to Escutia at first to wrap up the frame.
Gardiner hit Maci Fines with a pitch with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Rayna Cohen walked to bring up Bradford in the clean-up spot. Bradford flew out to left in her first at-bat of the season, but the runners couldn't advance. Thies reached on an infield single which allowed the tying run to score.
Swan led off the top of the seventh with a double. Carman singled in Swan and advanced to second on an error. Lemus flew out to left, but Carman was able to advance. With two outs, Sorensen singled to center to drive in Carman to make it 7-5.
The previous CSUN walks' record was 11, set against UC Santa Barbara on Apr. 22, 2006. The Matadors tied the Big West record for most walks in a game as Cal Poly (vs Oklahoma State on Feb. 10, 2006) Cal State Fullerton (vs Boise State on Feb. 13, 2015) both walked 13 times in a game.
Escutia tied the school record for most walks in a game with four. Amanda Peek set the mark at Cal Poly on Apr. 20, 2008. Swan was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. Carman went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored. Gardiner earned the win in with three innings of relief. Thies was 3-for-4 with three RBI to pace UCSB.
GAME 2
The Matadors scored six runs in the top of the seventh to outslug the Gauchos 12-6 in the nightcap.
Sorensen's one-out RBI single in the top of the first plated Lemus for an early CSUN lead.
A pair of Matador base hits led to CSUN loading the bases with one out in the top of the third. Alexa Landeros grounded into a 5-2 fielder's choice. Nunez walked to score the second Matador run before a pitch hit Mia Stankiewicz with the bases loaded, which created a 3-0 advantage for CSUN.
The Matadors chased Bradford, the UCSB starter, in the top of the fourth with runners on first and one out. Mills came on to pitch, and she issued an RBI single to Sorensen. A Mills wild pitch advanced Steward to third and Sorensen to second. Mills' second straight wild pitch allowed Steward to score and make it 5-0.
Pinch-hitter Daryn Siegel led off the Gauchos' fifth with a single Pinch-hitter Lucy Morgan doubled with one out to give UCSB two runners in scoring position. CSUN starter Alexis Martinez hit Alexa Sams to load the bases. A Martinez pitch hit Cohen to score Siegel. Gardiner came on in relief. Her first batter was Mills, who reached on an infield single to plate the Gauchos' second run.
With the infield in, Thies singled to right to drive in two more runs and cut the Matadors' advantage to one. Goldstein hit a liner off of Gardiner in the circle. The ball ended up in left, allowing two more UCSB runners to score and give the Gauchos their first lead of the game. A pitch hit Nodohara. The Gauchos officially batted around as Siegel came to the plate for the second time in the frame. She flew out to center before Stewart walked to load the bases. Mogan struck out to keep the score 6-5.
Mills walked Carman to open the CSUN sixth. Lemus' sac bunt pushed Carman to second. Steward grounded out to Mills as Carman headed to third. Sorensen walked to give CSUN runners on the corners. Escutia's infield single to second allowed Carman to score and tie the game. Mills' wild pitch allowed the runners to advance a base. Landeros walked to load the bases. The Matador inning ended when pinch-hitter Sami Garcia grounded into a fielder's choice at third.
Stankiewicz walked on four Mills pitches to kick off the CSUN seventh. Swan attempted to sacrifice Stankiewicz to second. Cohen, UCSB's first baseman, double-clutched on the throw to first, which allowed Swan to reach safely. Carman singled to right-center with runners on first and second, scoring Stankiewicz and advancing Swan to third. Carman took second on the throw home. Lemus' opposite-field double to left-center plated Swan and Carman to put CSUN up three. Mills' fourth wild pitch of the game allowed Lemus to reach third. Steward put the Matadors into double digits to drive in Lemus with a single to the left.
Bradford returned to the circle and met Sorensen. Steward stole second before Bradford struck out. Escutia hit a shot to Bradford, who fielded the ball cleanly but threw the ball into right field, allowing Steward to score on the error. Landeros' double drove in Escutia for a 12-6 score. Nunez walked to enable Stankiewicz to come to the plate for the second time in the inning. She would ground into a 5-3 double play to conclude the inning.
Lemus, Sorensen, and Steward each recorded two hits for the Matadors. Lemus scored three runs and posted two RBI. Escutia drove in two runs and scored twice. Mills was 3-for-4 with an RBI for UCSB.
NOTES
The Matadors walked 19 times in the two games…Neither team recorded a 1-2-3 inning until CSUN was retired in order in the top of the fifth...CSUN's first 1-2-3 inning was the UCSB sixth…Mills walked 15 on the day (11 in game one, four in game two).
