GAME 1
A seven-run rally in the bottom of the fourth sent the Matadors past the University of Rhode Island 9-1 in five innings to get the day underway.
The Matadors struck early as Mikayla Carman, batting second in the CSUN lineup, doubled in Carys Murakami in the bottom of the first to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead. Carman scored later in the inning when she came home on a Kylie Galindo ground out to short.
The Rams got on the board in the fourth. Rachell Zingerman tripled with one out and came around to score on a Becca Zawistowski single. With two outs, Cassie Swenson's single advanced Zawistowski to second. Pinch-hitter Caitlin O'Leary grounded out to second to end the inning.
Maddie Padilla led off the CSUN fourth with a single. Bella Mejia ran for Padilla and moved to second when Shaylan Whatman singled to right. Alexis Garcia reached on an error to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Maiya Alemania walked, which allowed Mejia to score. Pinch-hitter Gizella Vargas Sandoval singled to center to score Whatman. Murakami walked for an RBI as Garcia scored.
The game's third URI (2-11) pitcher, Noelle Sterner, entered to face Carman. Carman worked out a walk to plate Raegan Jackson for a 6-1 score. Kaylee Escutia's sacrifice fly drove in Sydney Freijanes as Murakami and Carman moved up a base. Both runners moved up a base on a Sterner wild pitch. Galindo walked to load the bases. Padilla's sacrifice fly scored Carman to put CSUN up by eight. Whatman flew out to left to end the inning.
Carman was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Murakami went 1-for-1 with two runs scored, two walks, and an RBI. Isabella Alonso earned the win. She went the first four innings. She struck out three and walked one. Lauryn Carranco pitched a scoreless fifth for the Matadors.
GAME 2
CSUN scored six runs in the first two innings as the Matadors defeated San José State 10-5 in the nightcap.
CSUN sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the first, scoring four times. Alemania's two-out double with the loaded bases drove in three runs.
The Matadors added two in the top of the second on a Padilla fielder's choice, which scored Murakami and a Whatman grounder to short that plated Carman.
Jenessa Ullegue doubled to begin the Spartans' second. With one out, Ullegue scored on Jocylyn Vidal's sacrifice fly. Alyssa Graham walked on four Alexis Martinez pitches to start the bottom of the third. Ahmiya Noriega grounded out first, allowing Graham to make it to second. Ashley Rico flew out to center, which allowed Graham to reach third. Adrianna Noriega doubled to left to score Graham. Ullegue flew out to center to end the frame.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Vidal reached on a CSUN error. Allie Gardiner, who relieved Martinez to start the inning, hit Arianna Miranda with a pitch. Jessica Giacoma's infield single loaded the bases. Graham's sac fly drove in San José State's third run. Noriega lined out to first for the final out.
Jordan Kaeka worked out a one-out walk in the top of the fifth. Garcia reached on an infield single. Jackson doubled down the left field line to drive in both Kaeka and Garcia to increase the back to five. Ashley Goard entered in the circle, and her first pitch was in the dirt, allowing Jackson to advance. Pinch-hitter Mia Stankiewicz's infield single scored Jackson. Stankiewicz stole second. Carman singled up the middle with two outs, but Stankiewicz was thrown out at home attempting to score.
Escutia tripled to lead off the sixth and scored on a Whatman single. The Spartans recorded back-to-back walks with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Graham popped up to short on a 3-1 Gardiner pitch for out number two. Noriega grounded out to Gardiner to end the inning.
