CSUN Splits on Day 1 of Hillenbrand Invitational
3/4/2023 10:12:00 PM | Softball
TUCSON, Ariz.—CSUN split two games at the University of Arizona Hillenbrand Invitational Saturday.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
"Today was a battle. Bell did a great job setting the tone in the first game in the circle, and we had some big two-out hits. We played a very clean game. We didn't come out sharp in game two, and they took advantage of our mistakes. I thought our hitters that came in did a great job giving us a chance to stay in it. We have to be able to handle success and turn around and continue to play the same game. We will continue to learn and get better."
GAME 1
CSUN scored 10 of their 11 runs with two outs to defeat Weber State 11-0 in five innings to open the day.
Maiya Alemania's two-out RBI single scored Mikayla Carman to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead in her first at-bat of the season. A four-run rally with two outs in the top of the second increased the CSUN lead to 5-0. Carman and Kaylee Escutia each recorded RBI singles before Kylie Galindo capped off the outburst with a single that plated Carman and Escutia.

Alemina followed with a single, which brought up Shaylan Whatman, who hit a three-run opposite field home run to right to make it 10-0 in favor of the Matadors. Carys Murakami's one-out grounder scored Alexis Garcia in the top of the fifth to cap off the CSUN scoring.
Isabella Alonso retired the final nine Wildcats (5-12) she faced to record a complete game one-hitter. Alonso faced one above the minimum as she struck out four. She threw 60 pitches, 42 for strikes.
