NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Led by strong pitching, CSUN swept a Big West softball doubleheader from CSU Bakersfield Friday at Matador Diamond.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
GAME 1
Lauryn Carranco retired the first 14 CSUB batters she faced on her way to a two-hitter as the Matadors defeated the Roadrunners 8-0 in six innings. Ciara Jensen broke up the no-hit attempt with a two-out infield single to short in the top of the fifth. Kailey Samora also reached on an infield single in the sixth.
Samora advanced to second on a Carranco wild pitch and moved to third on a passed ball before being stranded on base. Carranco, a freshman, struck out a season-high 11 and did not walk a batter. 59 of her 78 pitches were strikes.
Alexa Landeros tripled to lead off the CSUN second and scored on a Vinessa Nunez single. Alexis Garcia successfully sacrificed Nunez to second. Sydney Freijanes doubled down the left field line, but Nunez could only advance one base as she waited for a ruling of fair or foul by the umpire at home. With the CSUB infield in, Carys Murakami's grounder to second was enough to plate Nunez.
CSUN posted three consecutive hits to begin the third. With the bases loaded, Landeros singled up the middle to drive in Mikayla Carman and Kaylee Escutia for a 4-0 score. CSUN loaded the bases a second time against reliever Briana Sanchez. With one out, Freijanes hit a grounder to Jocelynn Molina at third. Molina's throw was high, allowing Kylie Galindo to score. The throw got away from catcher Maya Molina-Villareal, which scored Landeros. Murakami walked for a team-high 29th time to load the bases for the third time. Sanchez got a 4-3 double play to get the Roadrunners into the fourth.
Freijanes opened the sixth by reaching on a CSUB error. With one out, Shaylan Whatman reached on a fielder's choice allowing pinch-runner Bella Mejia to advance to second. A CSUN double steal was successful, as Natalya Rodriguez's throw went into left field, scoring Mejia. Carman singled up the middle to drive in Whatman to invoke the mercy rule.
Landeros was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI to pace the Matadors. Carman and Escutia both charted two hits. Nunez scored twice to go along with her RBI.
GAME 2
Isabella Alonso retired the final 12 Roadrunners she faced as the Matadors defeated CSUB 3-1 in the nightcap.
Three of the first four CSUB batters singled in the top of the first, resulting in a Samantha Martinez base hit that scored Karissa Munsey for a 1-0 advantage.
Whatman led off the bottom of the first with a double to left. She advanced to a third on a Sanchez (who started) wild pitch with one out. Galindo's liner to short with two outs was bobbled by Jordan Head, allowing Whatman to score.
Alonso relieved Alexis Martinez to start the second. CSU Bakersfield put two runners on with two outs before Maya Williams fouled out to left to end the inning.
Savanna Montoya doubled to left center to begin the top of the third for the Roadrunners. Lauren Randle was hit by an Alonso pitch with one out before Alonso struck out Molina-Villareal. Molina popped out to keep the score tied.
Whatman led off the bottom of the third by working out a walk. She stole second on the first pitch to Carman. Carman's ground out to first allowed Whatman to advance to third. Escutia grounded out to third to score Whatman and returned the lead to the Matadors.
Samora's single began the fourth. She advanced to second on a Head sacrifice bunt. Munsey's grounder back to Alonso was the second out, but it allowed Samora to take third. Finally, Maya Williams flew out to wrap up the frame.
Carman walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth. With Reagan Jackson at the plate, Carman stole second on a 1-2 count. Jackson lined to the third before Galindo flew out to left. Landeros singled through the left side to score Carman.
Alonso needed 24 pitches (81 total, 56 for strikes) over the final four innings to record her fifth win of the year. She scattered three hits in six innings of work. Landeros posted two of the three CSUN hits. Munsey was 2-for-4 to lead the 'Runners, which outhit the Matadors 6-3 in the game.
