CSUN Battles in 3-0 Defeat to UCLA
9/10/2023 6:23:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer fell to No. 4 UCLA by a 3-0 score on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Matador goalkeepers combined to record two saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN would keep the Bruins off the scoreboard for nearly the entire first half with UCLA only earning one shot on goal for 39-plus minutes. Hayden Mauldin had one save in the first half and would make key plays in the box to prevent any damage. However, a foul near the six-yard line took Mauldin out of the game in the 39th minute. Moments later, UCLA found the back of the net. On a drive up the middle of the field, Ashley Cruz nearly intercepted a pass but Bridgette Marin-Valencia picked up the loose ball and struck the net from the left wing.
Kennedy Williams, who replaced Mauldin late in the first half in goal, made her first career save on an attempt from Taylor Cheatham in the 62nd minute. CSUN remained behind by just a 1-0 deficit until the 63rd minute when a costly foul in its box resulted in a penalty. Reilyn Tuner connected on the penalty kick to put the Bruins on top 2-0. UCLA added its third goal of the afternoon in the 75th minute via a strike from Cheatham.

NOTES OF THE GAME
"I was so proud of our team with the way they came out and executed the game plan, and their fight and grit. We showed our physical and mental strength in this match. Realistically, four shots on goal, three of which went in [for UCLA]. I think two of them were our mistakes, and if you look at it like that, there was one goal that UCLA actually earned. Obviously, we're still hunting for a result, which would have been really nice to have today, but I feel pretty good going into conference.
The amount of adversity that they've dealt with in non-conference and the fact that they continue to show up and battle, it's just a testament to what they're made of. I'm not concerned about where we're at right now, I'm concerned with where we end. They are enjoying being a part of the process. They don't like losing but they like the fact that we're getting better and we're making small improvements here and there."
