OUTDOOR: Saw action in three events in the pole vault...cleared 13-7 1/4 at both the Northridge Invitational (Mar. 16) and the Pasadena Games (Mar. 23)...did not clear a height at the Cal State LA Invitational (Apr. 6).
INDOOR: Competed in one meet...did not record a height in the pole vault at the Texas A&M Invitational.
PRIOR TO CSUN: Spent two seasons (2010-12) at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif...finished second at the Orange Empire Conference Championships in the pole vault at 14-9 1/2...had a season-best of 15-6 for the Rustlers as a sophomore..... was a southern California championship qualifier in the decathlon as a freshman in 2011...earned his associate of arts degree in 2012 with a 3.4 grade point average.
HIGH SCHOOL: A 2010 graduate of Downey High School...a two-time San Gabriel Valley League pole vault champion in 2009 and 2010...the Vikings won the SGVL title under coach Tim Meledy in 2008...top pole vault mark was 13-3 as a senior...owns the sophomore vault record of 13-1...also qualified for the Junior Nationals in 2008...graduated with a 3.6 grade point average.
PERSONAL: Son of Drucilla Best and Darin Atchley...major is English Literature with a minor in Urban Studies...favorites include international pole vaulters Bjorn Otto and Sergei Bubka, actor Hugh Jackman, the TV show "The Walking Dead" and the movie "A Clockwork Orange"...chose CSUN "for the good team chemistry and the strength of the program"...says the best thing about being an athlete is "the pride of representing your school" and the toughest is "the pain required to improve"...once met Brad Pitt.
