CSUN Completes Day One of Big West Championships

LONG BEACH, Calif.---CSUN Track & Field opened its stay at the Big West Championships at Jack Rose Track on Friday. Through seven events, the Matador men sit in ninth place at nine points in the team standings while the Matador women hold on to 10th place at 6.5 points.Â
ON THE PODIUM
CSUN's senior thrower Tylor Connelly was the first Matador to reach the podium this weekend. Connelly took third place in the men's hammer throw with his toss of 63.62m (208-8), capturing six team points. His third-place finish represents the highest finish for Connelly at the Big West Championships in his Matador career. Two other Matadors competed in the hammer throw as Isaiah Butler was 10th at 54.85m (179-11) and Francisco Isiordia was 15th at 52.27m (171-6).Â
MATADOR SCORERS
On the women's team, sophomore Ashleigh Porter surpassed her finish from last season in the high jump. Porter was tied for fourth place, clearing her first attempt at 1.70m (5-7) and collecting 3.5 team points. After Porter, Naomi Sachs finished 12th with her top mark of 1.70m (5-7) while Jazmine Severo took 13th place, also reaching 1.70m (5-7).Â
Junior Lilit Arakelyan scored in the women's 3000m-steeplechase. Arakelyan, who broke the Matador school record in the event this season, finished sixth on Friday with a time of 10:47.17 to capture three team points. After Arakelyan, Savannah Ganter finished 11th overall in the event at 11:11.63.Â
On the men's team, Aiydan Bague collected three team points in the high jump with a PR of 2.04m (6-8.25) to finish sixth overall. Matthew Browner also competed in the high jump, finishing ninth overall at 1.94m (6-4.25).Â
CSUN FINALISTS
Sophomore Walter Pierce qualified for Saturday's finals in the men's 400m as he took second place in the prelims with a time of 47.01. Jayden Smith was 18th in the prelims, running at 49.28.Â
Senior James Crawford was sixth in the 100m prelims, advancing to the finals with his time of 10.28. Just missing the cut for the finals, Wyatt Wiggins, Jr. was 12th with a time of 10.51 while Daniel Harper set a PR of 10.61 to finish 18th.Â
Crawford also marched to the finals of the 200m, running at 20.81 in the prelims to take eighth place. Wiggins also competed in the event, taking 11th place at 20.92 followed by Pierce in 13th place at 20.99 and Harper in 18th place at 21.31.Â
Two Matadors moved on through to the finals in the men's 1500m. Elijah Stenberg was 10th overall in the prelims after coming in fifth in his heat. Stenberg ran at 3:59.15 while Camilo Torres was 12th overall at 3:56.73 to advance to the finals as well.Â
Serena Grace qualified for the final round in the women's 100m as she registered a season-best time of 11.64 to finish eighth in the prelims. Three other Matadors competed in the prelims but did not qualify for the finals. Makyla Jones was 15th overall at 11.77 followed by Amaya Rice, who set a PR of 11.87, to take 18th place. Finally, Hannah Bridge was 19th at 11.87.Â
OTHER MATADOR PERFORMANCES
CSUN returns to action at the Big West Championships on Saturday at Jack Rose Track. The Matadors open competition in the men's discus at 1:30 p.m. Track events begin at 2:00 p.m. with the men's 4x100m relay race.Â

- Senior Kyriaun Davis was ninth in the men's shot put, just missing out on scoring points. Davis posted a mark of 16.48m (54-1). Isiordia set a PR in the shot put of 15.81m (51-10.5) to finish 14th overall while Elijah Ignacio reached 15.80m (51-10) to place 15th.Â
- Senior Katherine Shipp-Davis advanced to the finals of the women's shot put, but missed out on scoring by taking ninth place with a mark of 13.92m (45-8). Amani Britton was 11th in the event, tossing at 13.77m (45-2.5) while Treasure Brown took 19th place with a mark of 13.13m (43-1).Â
- Tzu-Ting Chan posted a PR in the men's long jump, tying for 10th place at 7.21m (23-8). Bague finished 13th in the event with his leap of 7.11m (23-4) followed by Browner in 15th place at 6.97m (22-10.5) and Layne Buck in 16th place at 6.91m (22-8).Â
- In the women's long jump, Chandler Smith was 10th overall with her leap of 5.63m (18-5.75). Danielle Irvin followed in 21st place at 5.46m (17-11).Â
- In the men's 3000m-steeplechase, Ramiro Mateos set a PR of 9:19.63 to finish 10th overall while Diego Rodriguez was 13th at 9:31.81 and Omar Heredia was 18th at 10:08.21.Â
- In the women's 200m prelims, Jones was the top Matador by taking 10th place at 23.73. Other competitors in the event included Grace who was 14th at 23.83. Brianna Wells set a PR of 24.58 to take 25th place while Trystin Mitchell was 30th overall at 24.93.Â
- Ami Jacobson collected 11th place in the women's 10000m with her time of 37:44.36. Brianna Torres took 16th in the event at 38:09.70 while Nadia Munoz was 19th at 38:46.98 and Citlaly Ruiz was 22nd at 39:47.74.Â
- Thomas Achten took 12th place in the men's 10000m race, posting a time of 31:40.16.
- Ja'Patrick Smith competed in the men's 800m prelims where he took 15th place with his time of 1:55.75. Darrick Jacob, Jr. followed in 16th place with a time of 1:55.83 and Raul Verges took 18th place with his time of 1:56.83.
- In the women's 1500m prelims, Ailani Valiente finished 21st overall with her time of 4:57.91 and Sakura Divecchio took 22nd place with a time of 5:00.17.Â
- Wells led CSUN in the women's 400m prelims with her time of 56.75 to finish 23rd. Mitchell followed in 29th place at 58.37.Â
- Finally, Kahlai Cruser represented CSUN in the women's 800m prelims where she was 26th at 2:23.24.Â
CSUN returns to action at the Big West Championships on Saturday at Jack Rose Track. The Matadors open competition in the men's discus at 1:30 p.m. Track events begin at 2:00 p.m. with the men's 4x100m relay race.Â
