Brett Balkan assumed the role of starting shortstop in his final year with CSUN. He started and competed in 54 games for the Matadors and finished third on the team with a .285 batting average. Balkan had 51 hits, including five doubles, and was third on the team with 22 RBIs while scoring 20 himself. He set a new career high with three hits against UC Riverside (4/6) and matched that output with three against UC Davis (5/2). Balkan also drove in a pair of runs in five separate games. He was hit by a pitch 11 times and dropped down 12 sacrifice bunts in 2014, both among the top numbers in the Big West.
2013
Balkan competed in four games for CSUN early in the season before an injury cut it short. He went 4-for-7 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored. Balkan also drew three walks and had a sacrifice bunt.
2012
Balkan went 2-for-3 with two RBI including the game winner in the ninth inning in the Opening Day win at Sacramento State and also recorded six assists from third base on the day. He went 1-for-4 and scored a run in the home opener vs. #22 UCLA. Balkan drove in two runs with a single against Washington and had two RBI in the series sweep of Northwestern. He went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI at San Diego State on Mar. 4. Balkan went 2-for-3 at the plate and was hit by a pitch in the series finale against Indiana (3/11). He drove in a run with his first double of the year against Rhode Island (3/14). Balkan went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI at LMU (3/20) and he came on as a pinch hitter, walked twice and scored a run against the Lions on April 3. He came in as a defensive replacement at CSU Bakersfield (5/22) and drew a walk in his only plate appearance.
SAN DIEGO MESA COLLEGE
Balkan played two seasons for the Olympians in 2010-11 as an infielder. In his final season at San Diego Mesa, he was named a 1st Team All-American by the California Community College Athletic Association for the Southern California All-American Team. He also was awarded with a Gold Glove for his work at shortstop by the Northwest Association of Community Colleges.
CARLSBAD HIGH SCHOOL
Balkan was a two-sport athlete for the Lancers, also competing in soccer as a midfielder and forward. He earned numerous honors in both sports, bringing home 1st Team All-League and MVP accolades in 2008 and 2nd Team All-League and Best Offensive Player in 2009 as a soccer player. On the diamond, he earned a Gold Glove as the best defensive player in both 2008 and 2009. Balkan graduated in 2009 with a 3.4 GPA.
